Marine Corporal Grant Collins describes what it was like to participate in the war in Iraq. He also describes what it is like to live with giving orders that resulted in the deaths of civilians.

I posted this video from truthout.org for two reasons: 1) because it simply should be seen by as many people as possible, 2) every other copy that I found on YouTube had been posted by people with a very different and very negative political/social agenda from what the video represents. I think it is better served posted cleanly and in the original context it was intended to be seen.

Note: After receiving a number of complaints from other users about the comments on this video, I have disabled commenting and erased all the messages already posted (3000+, including some of my own). I had stopped monitoring the comments some time ago and when I came back to read them, found (perhaps unsurprisingly) that there were countless hate-filled messages posted that I think detracted from my original reason for posting this video in the first place. I am sorry for those who tried to have a rational discussion about the issues and politics involved, no matter your political stripe. I can respect a person who has a different opinion from my own, so long as they keep their arguments civil. However, I simply couldn't allow for the hate-filled rants to continue. The last thing I wanted was for this video posting to become a forum for hate speech.

The mental health consequences of combat threaten to overwhelm a new generation of veterans. There are 1.7 million men and women who have served, or are currently serving, in Iraq and Afghanistan. About 1 in 5 Iraq and Afghanistan veterans are suffering from a mental health injury, ranging from depression to Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), as a result of their service.

Less than 1% of the U.S. population has served or is serving in the current conflicts and when they return home, their sense of isolation is often magnified. This campaigns long-term objective is to decrease the depression and PTSD-related outcomes among returning Vets by taking a two-pronged approach encouraging Veterans to join other Veterans at the first ever online community exclusive to OIF/OEF Vets, and separately, to empower their Friends and Family by helping them learn how to start constructive conversations. The challenges facing returning vets are myriad but with support from other Veterans, family, and friends the issues can be effectively dealt with.

Old soldier George Ives was 111 years old when this sequence was filmed for the documentary series 'Instrument of War' the story of the Great Highland Bagpipe. As the last survivor of the Boer War, 1899-1902, he was truly a living link with history.
