One of His best songs.

This is a murder ballad I wrote about a killing in West Virginia. It's not based on any true story, at least not that I know of, anyway. Anyhoo.... I wrote a couple of tunes for a Twin Cities bluegrass outfit, Pocahontas County, and we recorded them under the name "The Messy Fergusons." I was talking to Jake Hyer (later of The Get Up Johns) and he mentioned that he was from an area of West Virginia near Droop Mountain. I asked him if he'd written any songs about the area he was from, and he said he hadn't. So I figured I'd give it a try. I went home and Googled "Droop Mountain" and got a sense of where it was and what the towns were around there (and thank goodness it's close to the Greenbrier River) and sat down and made up a murder ballad. I think part of my inspiration was Jack Clements' tune "Miller's Cave," which was done by a bunch of artists, including Gram Parsons. I once said in a radio interview that as songwriters, we're all just trying to re-write Townes Van Zandt's "Pancho & Lefty," but I think some of us are also trying to re-write "Miller's Cave," too. Pocahontas County never wound up working up or recording the song, by the way.
