Berezovsky plays Islamey

From a 2005 recital in Mexico City. This exact performance became my new "Islamey" standard. I already had one from Boris on CD; this one surpasses it in both musicality, spontaneity, and brilliance.

Balakirev Islamey Bronfman Rec.1998

This performance by Yefim Bronfman will not please those who think that Islamey can only be played like---name your favorite recording. For instance, I have had the old 78rpm 1936 recording of Simon Barere for well over fifty years. It is a fabulous performance and is the best (in my opinion)of the "pull out all the stops" recordings. Barere's interpretation is one way of playing this composition, but not the only way.It is played here by a pianist with a big technique, and more importantly, a pianist who is a discerning musician. Isn't it nice to hear the left hand 16th note triplets in the Andante Espressivo section? And isn't it nice to hear all of the notes clearly articulated in the surrounding sections? (However,Barere's accuracy is phenomenal concidering the tempo he sets for himself). Bronfman's performance made me realize that this composition is good enough to be interpreted in more than one stereotyped way. Barere's conception of Islamey, recorded in 1936,originated with him. It was not a copy of someone elses's interpretation.Like all great pianists,Barere could think for himself as can Yefim Bronfman. This is not a fake performance with notes left out to facilitate speed with the pedal nailed to the floor to cover up a less than immaculate performance. I recently heard Yefim Bronfman give a magnificent performance of the Tchaikovsky First Piano Concerto with the Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Esa-Pekka Salonen. Bronfman has recorded the complete Prokofiev Piano Sonatas and all five of Prokofiev's Piano Concertos. His discography also includes the three piano concertos of Bela Bartok. As did Harold Bauer and Ossip Gabrilowitsch before them,Yefim Bronfman and Emanuel Ax often present two-piano recitals. And like Bauer and Gabrilowitsch, both pianists often engage in performing chamber music.
