An extremely agitated thylacine. Notice that when rearing up on its hind legs, it often rests the entire heel on the ground in a "plantigrade" stance. This accounts for the long heel mark sometimes seen in its tracks. This doesn't usually occur in dogs, as they walk primarily on just their toes.

Sorry folks, "The Wonders of Oz" episode 5 isn't quite ready. BUT, here is the full 1933 "Wizard of Oz" cartoon. It will be covered in Wonders 5, so consider this a preview.

This is the first ever Oz cartoon, animated by Ted Eshbaugh. It is public domain. It pre-dates the MGM movie, but notice that Kansas is in black and white, while Oz is in color.

After other countries abandoned the gold standard in the early days of the Great Depression, the Hoover administration stayed on in, even though doing so may U.S. goods less competitive. Franklin Roosevelt effectively abandoned the gold standard in 1933. He returned to a modified version of it the following year but with the price of gold raised to $35 per ounce. After WW2, the Roosevelt $35 price became enshrined in the Bretton Woods international monetary system until President Nixon ended that system in 1971.
