About The Weeknd – Often

Most people know Abel Tesfaye by his stage name of The Weeknd. He is a songwriter, singer and producer from Scarborough, Ontario in Canada. Abel is associated with the PBR&B genre of music. It all started for him when he uploaded many songs anonymously to YouTube in 2010. That’s when he took the name of The Weeknd, because he left one weekend and never actually came back. He also dropped out of high school. Abel says that this weekend changed his life. The songs he released through YouTube became quite a hit. Eventually he was signed by Republic and XO. He has been releasing his songs through these labels since then.

Tesfaye is of Ethiopian descent. He became interested in music at a very young age, and grew up listening to music from different genres, including quiet storm, soul, funk, hip hop, post-punk, and indie pop. It was his grandmother who was looking after the young Abel as his mother was working and dad was never around. He learned to speak the Amharic language fluently from his grandmother. She was also the inspiration behind his music.

The Weeknd has released just a single studio album. That was “Kiss Land” of September 2013. It went on to sell more than 137,000 copies in the US alone. As you can understand, the album was a huge commercial success. He has also released a single compilation album – “Trilogy” of November 2012. The Weeknd has come out with three mixtapes – “House of Balloons”, “Thursday”, and “Echoes of Silence”. All three were released in 2011.

Many of his songs have reached high positions in charts in the US, UK, and Canada. The Weeknd has also won many awards, including the MTV O Music Awards, Juno Awards, MTV Video Music Awards, MuchMusic Video Awards, and the Grammy among others, making him one of the most watched and sought after musicians in recent times. Many music publications like BET, MTV, XXL, Rolling Stone, The Source, and Pitchfork have praised his work. In fact, John Norris of MTV has even said that Abel Tesfaye is the “best musical talent since Michael Jackson”. That’s quite a compliment.

“Often” is a song by The Weeknd. The song was released through Republic Records on SoundCloud. Tesfaye has worked with Republic before. So this association is nothing new. He has come out with a music video of the song as well. The video has been directed by Sam Pilling. Sam incidentally has directed several of his other videos too, like “Live For” and “Pretty”. In this video, you can see Abel singing in a hotel room moodily. There are several models in lingerie coming and going from the frame.

It has been a while since he has come out with new material since “Kiss Land”. So the singer himself had high expectations on this track, like many others. And Often has not let them down. It is doing very well at the charts. Popular radio stations have played this song many times already.
