About The Beatles – Hey Jude

One of the best songs from a band that’s among the greatest ever! That’s how “Hey Jude” by “The Beatles” has been described. Hey Jude has been played by radio stations countless times. The track’s music video has been watched millions of times. It has not just been a roaring commercial success, this track has been hailed as an epic by the critics as well.

The Beatles started small. They used to play in small clubs and bars at Hamburg in Germany and Liverpool in England in their formative years. But then came along Brian Epstein, who was to become their Manager, and George Martin, their producer, and the musical potential of the group was thoroughly enhanced. Slowly but surely, The Beatles gained popularity across the UK. Soon enough they came to be known as “the Fab Four” – John Lennon, George Harrison, Paul McCartney, and Ringo Starr. It became a rage as “Beatlemania” swept through the country.

And come 1964, Beatlemania crossed the Atlantic to sweep through the United States. The rest as they say is history. The four boys became pop icons. This was hailed as the “British Invasion”. In time, this group would be known as the greatest music band the world has ever seen, a band that influenced cultures across the world.

The Beatles has over the years produced more than 20 studio albums and many LPs. “Hey Jude” is a song from their record label Apple Records. It was released in August 1968. This is a ballad that has evolved from “Hey Jules”, which was written by McCartney for Julian, John Lennon’s son, to comfort him because his parents were divorcing. John was separating at the time from his wife Cynthia because of his affairs with Yoko Ono. Paul visited the mom and son, because they were great friends. He then decided to come out with a song to comfort them in the best way he knew.

The track starts off with a verse-bridge structure that is based on McCartney’s vocals. It is supported by piano. More instruments are added as the song progresses. It fades out after the fourth verse. Hey Jude runs for seven minutes and four seconds. At the time of its release, this was the longest track to have ever made it to the top positions in the British charts.

Hey Jude has been critically acclaimed universally. It was nominated for the Grammy Awards of 1969 – in the Song of the Year, and Best Pop Performance by a Duo or Group categories. However it didn’t win any award. But in the end, the track was judged to be the “best single of the year”. Time praised it saying that McCartney’s effort to overcome fears and commit to love is amazing. The Village Voice says that “it’s one of the truest and most forthright love songs”. Rolling Stone said that the song was a message from Paul to John to end his negative relationships with women, and go through with real love.
