About Pharrell Williams – Happy

Pharrell Williams, the record producer, rapper, singer-songwriter and even fashion designer from the US is on a roll over the last few years. It’s been like this ever since he released his second solo studio album. He composed the film score of the Golden Globe nominated animated film “Despicable Me” in 2010. But this time, he’s back truly as a solo artist with the lead single “Happy” from his second studio album “G I R L” that was released on March 3rd 2014. Both the audio and video versions of Happy were however released a few months back, on November 21st 2013 by Back Lot Music under exclusive license to Sony Music’s division Columbia Records.

This track is produced and written by Pharrell himself. There are backing vocals from Trevon Henderson, Rhea Dummett, Shamika Hightower, Ashley L. Lee, Terrence Rolle and Jasmine Murray.

Happy is a funk and neo soul song where the falsetto voice of Williams can be compared with Curtis Mayfield. His voice comes out with a strong Motown feel. It is simple and archetypal. There are no embellishments. The track is extremely catchy. This one is going to make you feel like singing along and dancing. The song is infectiously cheerful. Its summery vibes will ease the seasonal misery winter. It is really wonderfully innocent, and that’s one reason why Happy has picked up so much. Who wants life to be complicated after all? It’s not something you’ll find easily in your average modern pop song.

Sure enough, Happy can get a bit repetitive after a while, but perhaps that’s the beauty of it. The track is uncomplicated, showing a clear sentiment. Its retro soul roots, upbeat tone and handclapping break all works for the song. There’s hardly any negative side of this song.

Pharrell Williams has been a part of The Neptunes Pharrell. He has produced a lot of #1 tracks for several megastars like Mariah Carey, Madonna, Janet Jackson, Britney Spears, Gwen Stefani, Snoop Dogg, Justin Timberlake, Nelly, Jay-Z, Shakira, Mystikal and others. He knows how to make it work. This experience has surely helped him come out with a winner such as Happy. Interestingly, Happy was originally written for Cee-Lo Green. Williams felt that Green’s recording would be better for this song.

Happy has reached #1 on the pop singles chart of 22 countries, which includes Germany, France, Ireland, Italy, Canada, Australia, Spain, Poland and the UK. It reached #1 position in the US Billboard Hot 100 chart for the week ending March 8th 2014. This made it the fourth Hot 100 number-one single from Williams. It stayed at #1 for the next week as well, and also topped the Hot 100 Airplay chart.

Critics have loved the track. And the viewers and listeners have lapped it up. Its four minute and eight second video has been viewed more than 300 million times on YouTube. It has received more than 18 million Likes. There are thousands of comments as well. Pharrell Williams is on to even bigger things with the success of Happy.
