About Motley Crue – Home Sweet Home

Mötley Crüe is a heavy metal music band from Los Angeles, California, USA. The band was established in 1981, and since then, it has been among the most successful bands ever, as they have sold more than 90 million records worldwide. 50 million of them have been just in the United States. Mötley Crüe belongs to the hard rock and glam metal genres too. Founder members of the group were drummer Tommy Lee, and the bass guitarist Nikki Sixx. They were soon joined by the lead singer Vince Neil and lead guitarist Mick Mars. Interestingly, the band members of Mötley Crüe are often known for their unique hedonistic lifestyles and their personalities. A lot of their members have faced trouble with the law. In fact, they have even spent time in jail and suffered from heroin and cocaine addictions and severe alcoholism issues. Many of the band members have had troubles with women too.

They have released nine studio albums. “Too Fast for Love” of 1981 is the first, and “Saints of Los Angeles” of 2008 is their latest. “Home Sweet Home” is a song from their third studio album “Theatre of Pain” of 1985. However the song was released again in 1991 as a part of their compilation album – “Decade of Decadence”. Home Sweet Home has been described as a power ballad.

Home Sweet Home, along with “Wild Side” has both been written by Vince Neil, which is extremely rare, as Vince has written very few hit songs for this band.

Mötley Crüe released a music video with the song. This video documented their work in several concerts. A part of this video was shot in Houston, Texas. It was live at The Summit during the 1985 Theatre of Pain tour. The group did this song live twice in the concert so that they could get more video footage that would be later added. Later the group came out with a remixed version of the track twice. It was once done for a 1985 promotional. It was only sent to stations, and not released commercially till 1988. It was remixed for the second time in 1991. That version is often referred to as “Home Sweet Home 91”.

Home Sweet Home went on to become a huge success. It was so successful that several bands began to use the same marketing formula in the latter half of the 1980s. Of course very few of them were as successful. After all, just marketing cannot produce a hit single.

The original version of Home Sweet Home charted at #89 on the Billboard Hot 100 list. The 1991 version did well too. It peaked at #37 on the same chart in 1992. Sadly, the 1991 version is the last song from Mötley Crüe that has featured in the American Billboard Top 40 listing.

Carrie Underwood has also come out with another version of the track in the American Idol season 8 in 2009. There have been very few songs that have seen so many versions being produced.
