About Mary Lambert – Secrets

Mary Danielle Lambert or simply Mary Lambert is a singer, songwriter, poet, gay rights activist and spoken word artist from Seattle, Washington, United States. She belongs to the following genres – spoken word, pop, folk, and R&B. Mary is best known for her vocal performances, but is also extremely comfortable with the cello, guitar and piano. She has been active on the music scene since 2011.

Her young days weren’t good, as she was sexually abused when she was just a child. Mary says that she was extremely depressed at the age of eight years. But she was already into music at that time. Mary had self-learned the piano when she was just six. Later, this piano would let her escape from her traumas. Mary’s work, her music and poetry, often highlights issues of early childhood traumas, body image, sexual abuse, bipolar disorder, and her own sexuality (she and her mother too, are both declared lesbians). Her songs are often emotionally charged. Her songs are a mix of Tori Amos, James Blake and Adele. Her shows have been described as places where crying is acceptable, and even encouraged.

She hasn’t come out with any studio album yet. However the first one (Heart On My Sleeve) is about to be released (October 14th 2014). Mary has released a couple of extended plays though – “Letters Don’t Talk” of 2012, and “Welcome to the Age of My Body” of 2013. She has come out with a few singles as the lead artist and featured artist in the last couple of years. All her singles have made it to prominent positions in charts across the world.

“Secrets” is a song by Mary Lambert, and it’s going to be a part of her debut studio album Heart On My Sleeve. It’s going to be the lead single of this album. This pop and hip hop song (it is mainly pop, but there are some elements of hip hop here as well) was released on July 15th 2014 for digital download through Capitol Records. Secrets have been written by MoZella, Benny Cassette, Eric Rosse, and by Lambert. Benny Cassette and Eric Rosse are the producers. B.o.B has added his own verse here. About a month after the release of Secrets, B.o.B came out with his own remix version of the song.

Secrets, like so many other songs of Mary, are a confession of the real-life insecurities of Mary. She deals with a variety of issues here, such as homosexuality, and dysfunctional family situations among others. But finally, this song is about acceptance of reality and self-empowerment.

This latest song from Lambert has been doing very well at the charts. It has featured at #92 on US Billboard Hot 100, at #16 on US Adult Top 40, at #15 on US Heatseekers Songs, and at #47 on the US Hot Dance Club Songs charts. It is climbing fast in several charts.

The official video was uploaded to YouTube on July 31st. It has been viewed close to 2.5 million times as of the middle of September 2014.
