About Hunter Hayes – Invisible

If you look closely at the Billboard chart, you’ll see that there are a lot of songs in there from country music. Now, the genre was always popular, but it wasn’t mainstream. Is this a kind of revolution happening? Is country going mainstream now? Take for instance “Invisible” from Hunter Hayes, the country music singer, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist from Breaux Bridge in Louisiana. Hunter can play more than 30 instruments including the bass guitar, accordion, keyboard, piano, drums, and the mandolin, but of course his main talent is in vocals. He is the latest country star among many others to be ascending and getting a huge fan following.

Hunter’s first studio album (self-titled) was released on October 11th 2011. It was a big one selling more than 1,100,000 copies. He has come out with a second album – “Storyline” on May 6th 2014. “Invisible” is the fifth track in this album. Hayes has co-written this song with Katrina Elam and Bonnie Baker. Its production work has been looked after by Dann Huff and Hayes. A music video of the song was released on March 13th 2014.

Interestingly, Invisible is from Hayes’ personal experience and feelings. He wrote the lyrics about bullying that he himself went through while he was growing up. It comes out powerfully in the lines – “Trust the one / Who’s been where you are wishing all it was / Was sticks and stones / Those words cut deep but they don’t mean you’re all alone / And you’re not invisible”. Eventually however, Hayes was able to make peace with his classmates, but you’ll know that somewhere in his heart, he still remembers those days.

The track isn’t built around a hook or melody that is going to stick with you. There are details in the lines that anybody who has gone through bullying will identify with instantly. This 22 year old singer surely knows what he is talking about. This song is about self-esteem. It assures you that you are amazing, even though you are being bullied. Invisible also tells you that the bullies and narrow-minded and ignorant, and assures you by saying that things are going to be better some day.

It’s certainly different, because this theme hasn’t been touched on too often. Perhaps this is the song many teens and young people need in college. No wonder, it’s become so popular now. Invisible could be an eye-opener for the bullies in college as well. Some of them could take note of how it feels to be bullied. Hunter is somebody that many young people look up to and admire now, for having the courage to admit that he was bullied, and for doing something about it.

Invisible has done very well at the charts. It peaked at #26 on the Canadian Hot 100, at #30 on the Canada Country (Billboard), at #44 on the US Billboard Hot 100, and #4 on the US Hot Country Songs (Billboard) charts. It was also played at the 2014 Grammy Awards.
