About Eagles – Hotel California

What is more famous? Is it the band “Eagles” or their track “Hotel California”? That is a question thousands, and even millions of music lovers have been asking for so many years now. Hotel California came out first in 1977 as a part of Eagles’ album of the same name. But it’s one track that is played a lot, even now, even after almost four decades after its release. Hotel California has been played millions of times in all these years. The track is most famous for its incredible guitar work.

The rock band Eagles was formed in Los Angeles in 1971. The founding members were Bernie Leadon, Randy Meisner, Don Henley and Glenn Frey. Over several years, Eagles has won many awards and recognitions for their work, such as five American Music Awards, six Grammy Awards, and six #1 albums. The Eagles went on to emerge as the most successful musical acts of the 1970s. However the group is remembered for Hotel California. It has been ranked among the 20 best-selling albums in the U.S. by the Recording Industry Association of America. Rolling Stone has ranked it 37th in the list of “The 500 Greatest Albums of All Time”. The magazine ranks Eagles at #75 in the list of “100 Greatest Artists of All Time”, mainly because of Hotel California. Indeed, very few songs have been this successful.

The lyrics of this track tell a story of a weary traveler checking into a hotel. At first, the hotel appears tempting and inviting (the lyric says… “Welcome to Hotel California, it’s a lovely place, a lovely place). However in truth, it’s actually a nightmarish place where travelers are allowed to check out anytime they want, but actually, they can never leave. Some people call it a story about ghosts. Others have said that it’s about the Camarillo State Mental Hospital. But the truth is that, the story is about self-destruction, hedonism and greed in the American music industry during the latter half of the 1970s. It’s a track about the dark underbelly of the American dream.

Hotel California has become so famous that many cover versions and parodies have been released by many musicians like Nancy Sinatra, Gipsy Kings, Marilyn Manson, Rascal Flatts, Alabama 3, William Hung, Max Romeo, Frank Ocean, Sam Hui, Timeflies and many others.

Don Henley kick starts the vocals in Hotel California around the minute mark. It’s just after the famous door knocking sound. The rhythm is enchanting and the lyrics are simple. Though the song is best known for its guitar, but Hotel California’s vocals do pack a punch as well in spite of being on the softer side. The first chorus begins around the second minute. This is the most famous part of the song. There are quirky electric guitar rifts in between. The third stanza is the most controversial in this song. The song begins to fade away around the sixth minute, and dies off around 6:30.
