It’s been more than two years now since Chief Keef, the young rapper from Illinois released “Love Sosa”. But it continues to soar on YouTube and other video channels. As of June 2014, there have been 38,431,573 for this music video. 117,365 people have “liked” Love Sosa already. More than 81,000 people have commented on this video, and most of them are extremely positive ones too.
Born by the name of Keith Cozart, Chief Keef as he is popularly known as, has witnessed a meteoric rise. He was in house arrest on weapons charge, and had nothing much to do. So he turned to music. Chief created and posted his videos on YouTube. They were instant hits. Some of his first videos were 3Hunna, Bang and I Don’t Like. In fact, like Love Sosa, the “I Don’t Like” video too became an instant hit in Chicago. It caught the attention of rapper Kenye West as well. He worked with Big Sean, Jadakiss and Pusha T to come out with a remix version.
Boosted by the early successes, Keef was soon in the middle of a bidding war. Many popular music labels wanted to sign him up for future album deals. But Keith chose Interscope Records. It got him a three album deal and a cool six million dollars. That was in the summer of 2012.
Soon enough Keef was working on his first album. “Finally Rich” was eventually released on 18th December 2012. The album was produced by Dougie and Young Chop. Love Sosa is included in this album. However it was released before the album was launched.
The Love Sosa music video came out on October 18th 2012, a couple of months before the album. Interestingly, it was shot in the same place (indoors, with a room full of dudes) as the first single. It’s become such a big hit since then that it’s already been said that “Love Sosa” is going to be a “new milestone” for rap. Though he was just 17 at the time, but Keef looks much older here. His voice is also deeper. The video can be offensive for some people at times, as Sosa (Keef’s nickname), says that “Keef’s boys will shoot you with a Colt King Cobra .357 Magnum, and you’ll slump over. Dead”. But his followers still love him, particularly the girls.
Even his detractors admitted that Chief Keef has made it big with Love Sosa. With this video, he has managed to become much bigger than just the Chicago market. It’s not just a 15-minute of fame anymore, they said.
Love Sosa was eventually ranked at #20 in the list of 50 best songs for 2012. It reached #56 on the Billboard Hot 100 list, and #20 on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart. Love Sosa was also at #17 on the Rap Songs chart. Rapper Drake loved it and said so on Twitter. He said that he played in 130 times in just 3 days. Love Sosa was even included in the Grand Theft Auto V video game.
