About Black Sabbath – War Pigs

Black Sabbath is a rock band from England. The band was formed in 1969 in Birmingham by lyricist and bassist Geezer Butler, songwriter Tony Iommi, drummer Bill Ward and singer Ozzy Osbourne. However originally, the members had decided to name the band “Earth”. Since then, the lineup has changed a number of times though. For instance, Osborne, who was a key person, was dismissed from the band because of his drug addiction problems. Tony Iommi is the only person who remains in the group, though he too had left it for some time. Black Sabbath is best known for coming up with horror-inspired lyrics and occult themes. But from time to time, they have composed songs on political corruption, dangers of drug abuse, horrors of war and such other social issues.

Black Sabbath has given us a lot of studio albums over so many years like Paranoid of 1970, Sabbath Bloody Sabbath of 1973, Technical Ecstasy of 1976, Heaven and Hell of 1980, Seventh Star of 1986, Headless Cross of 1989, and Forbidden of 1995 among others. “War Pigs” is a track from their studio album Paranoid of 1970. It’s the opening track in this album.

This track is kind of a Christmas for Satanists. It deals with the witches’ sabbath. Lyricist and bassist of the group Geezer Butler say that to him at least “war is the big Satan”. So it can be said that War Pigs is an anti-war song. However, he goes on to state that the song was not about government, politics or anything. It starts off with a man saying that he wants to “destroy and kill”. Sabbath has conceded that the idea of the song came from war stories they heard during a show at an American Air Force base while the group was touring Europe. The band members have revealed that the song was written while they were feeling very grim.

Black Sabbath used to perform this song often live before it was officially released, and they used to change the lyrics at times in these performances. The first time they performed War Pigs live was at The Beat Club in Switzerland. That was in 1968.

War Pigs has received positive reviews from almost all critics. And not just the vocals and its lyrics, even the guitar work in this track have been praised by most people. In fact, Guitar World readers have ranked it at #56 in a popular poll that aimed to come out with a list of the 100 Greatest Guitar Solos. Martin Popoff while reviewing the song has said that War Pigs is an “antiwar classic”.

It has become so popular that there are many references of the song in popular culture. For instance, the Hungarian band Warpigs is named after the song. War Pigs has featured in the video game Guitar Hero II of 2006 and also in the trailer for the video game Gears of War 3. A remixed version of the song has been included in the trailer of the film “300: Rise of an Empire”.
